US Election Night

Americans vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3, in the U.S. midterm elections. This page gathers TruthRank’s approved stories about the vote itself: ballots, court rulings, early voting, campaigns and how the election is run. They are ranked by truth score, highest first, never by party or candidate. This is not a results page and it makes no calls or projections.

While votes are counted: On election night, early leads often change as different kinds of ballots (in person, early and by mail) are counted at different times. A shifting lead is a normal part of counting and is not, by itself, a sign of a problem. Official results come from state and local election offices, and certification can take days or weeks.

Judge Rejects DOJ Bid to Set Aside 20,000 California Ballots

U.S. District Judge David O. Carter on Wednesday denied the Trump administration’s emergency request to make California and Los Angeles County set aside about 20,000 mail ballots from voters it calls likely noncitizens. Carter called the allegations “not credible” and said the request “violates longstanding constitutional principles mandating that states have control over their elections.” It is the government’s second loss this week, after a 9th Circuit panel on Monday. The Justice Department says it will appeal.
