UN Mission in Western Sahara Left in Limbo After Rival Vetoes

Russia vetoed a U.S.-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution on Western Sahara on Friday despite 11 votes in favour, with three abstentions. The U.S. text would have renamed the mission, dropping “Referendum,” and made Morocco’s autonomy plan the only basis for talks. A rival Russian draft for a simple one-year renewal then got only three votes, with the U.S. voting against. The mandate of MINURSO, the U.N. mission created in 1991, expires Saturday, Oct. 31. The U.S. said it is prepared to work with the Secretary-General on an orderly drawdown.
